Vomiting after eating fish: what to know

Fish can cause vomiting when it is contaminated, spoiled, undercooked or difficult for your stomach to tolerate. Food poisoning may bring cramps, diarrhoea or fever, while an allergic reaction can cause hives, swelling, wheezing or throat tightness. Some fish-related toxin illnesses can also cause flushing, tingling or headache. Vomiting alone cannot identify the cause. Gallstones, migraine and gastroenteritis may happen after a meal by coincidence.

Stop eating the suspected fish and keep the packaging or leftovers if they can be stored safely; do not taste them. Sip water or oral rehydration fluid in small amounts. Rest, then choose plain food when nausea eases. Avoid preparing food for other people while vomiting or having diarrhoea, and wash your hands carefully. If allergy symptoms are present, treat this as urgent rather than waiting for stomach symptoms to pass.

Call emergency services for trouble breathing, throat or tongue swelling, faintness, confusion or blue lips. Seek urgent medical care for blood in vomit or stool, severe abdominal pain, repeated vomiting, signs of dehydration, high fever, or neurological symptoms such as marked weakness or trouble walking. Contact a clinician if symptoms persist, several diners are ill, or you are pregnant, elderly or immunocompromised.

Ask whether the pattern suggests food poisoning, allergy or toxin exposure, and whether testing or treatment is needed. Share the fish type, where it was eaten, how it was prepared, when symptoms began, who else ate it, and any rash, breathing change, fever or diarrhoea.
