What should you know about vocal hoarseness?

A recent [Common Cold](/conditions/common-cold/) can inflame the voice box, while shouting, singing, smoking, or prolonged speaking can strain the vocal cords. Less common causes include nerve problems, vocal-cord growths, and conditions affecting the thyroid or chest.
