Vitamin E for stretch marks: before and after

Stretch marks are lines formed when the deeper skin stretches and its supporting structure changes. They may begin red, purple or darker than surrounding skin and often become paler and less noticeable over time. Moisturiser can reduce dryness and improve surface comfort, but it cannot rebuild every altered layer.

Photographs can exaggerate differences because lighting, posture, skin tone and camera distance change the appearance. Compare images taken under similar conditions, and judge texture and colour separately. A product that irritates the skin may make marks look more prominent temporarily.

Patch-test any new product on a small area and stop if burning, swelling or a worsening rash develops. Apply a plain moisturiser for comfort, and avoid promising claims about oils or creams. A dermatologist can assess the age, colour and texture of the marks and discuss suitable options.

Procedures such as microneedling, fractional laser treatment, RF microneedling or carboxytherapy may be considered for selected people. Results vary, and treatment commonly involves a series of appointments and a healing period. Ask about pigment changes, downtime and aftercare for your skin tone.

Seek medical advice if marks appear suddenly alongside easy bruising, muscle weakness, significant weight change or long-term steroid use. Obtain prompt care for severe pain, blistering, facial swelling or breathing difficulty after applying vitamin E or another product.

Ask whether the lines are stretch marks or another skin change, what improvement is realistic, and which treatment suits their colour and texture. Discuss skin type, pregnancy or breastfeeding, healing time, pigment risk and the number of visits likely to be needed.
