Vitamin E for vaginal dryness: what to know

Short answer
Vitamin E is not a proven treatment for vaginal dryness, and inserting supplements or oils can irritate sensitive tissue.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Internal use
- Do not insert vitamin E products without clinical advice.
- Common support
- Moisturisers help ongoing dryness; lubricants reduce friction.
Why dryness happens
Vaginal dryness can occur when oestrogen levels change during perimenopause, menopause or premature ovarian insufficiency. It may cause burning, itching, discomfort during sex, or urinary symptoms. Genitourinary syndrome of menopause describes a wider group of vaginal and urinary changes linked with reduced oestrogen. Vitamin E taken by mouth does not restore vaginal tissue directly, and products made for skin are not automatically suitable for internal use.
New dryness can also relate to medicines, irritation, infection or other health conditions, so the surrounding symptoms matter.
Safer ways to respond
Avoid perfumed washes, douches and fragranced products around the vulva. A vaginal moisturiser used as directed may support ongoing comfort, while a water-based lubricant can reduce friction during sex. Do not insert vitamin E capsules or household oils unless a clinician specifically advises it. Ask about vaginal oestrogen therapy or other hormone treatment if symptoms persist, especially when dryness affects sleep, intimacy or urination.
When to seek care
Arrange an assessment for bleeding after sex or menopause, unusual discharge or odour, sores, pelvic pain, burning when passing urine, or symptoms that continue despite gentle care. Fever, severe pelvic pain, inability to pass urine or rapidly worsening symptoms need urgent attention.
Questions for your doctor
Ask whether the symptoms fit genitourinary syndrome of menopause, whether infection testing is needed, and which moisturiser or lubricant suits you. Discuss vaginal oestrogen therapy, hormone replacement therapy and any reasons these options may or may not be suitable.
