Does a vitamin D test need fasting?

The test measures 25-hydroxyvitamin D in a blood sample. Eating and drinking normally does not usually prevent this measurement, so a vitamin D test on its own commonly needs no fasting. The same appointment may include tests that have different preparation rules, which is why the laboratory or clinician's instructions take priority. Your result is interpreted with your symptoms, medicines, health history and the laboratory's reference range; it is not a diagnosis in isolation.

Check the appointment message or call the laboratory before changing your meals. If fasting has been requested for another test, ask whether plain water is allowed and when you should stop eating. Tell the clinician about supplements, including vitamin D, and prescribed medicines; do not stop a medicine unless they advise it. Bring previous results if available. After testing, discuss whether an unusual level needs dietary advice, a repeat measurement, or vitamin D supplementation.
