Understanding the vitamin D hydroxy level

Short answer
The hydroxy vitamin D level is a blood measure of vitamin D status, interpreted with your laboratory range, symptoms and health history.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What is measured
- Usually twenty-five-hydroxyvitamin D in a blood sample.
- Interpretation
- Use the report’s units and laboratory range with clinical context.
What the result measures
The test commonly measures twenty-five-hydroxyvitamin D, the main circulating form used to assess vitamin D stores. A report may use different units or reference ranges, so a result should not be judged by a generic number copied from elsewhere. A lower result may support a diagnosis of deficiency when it fits the clinical picture, while symptoms such as fatigue or widespread pain can have other causes. Fibromyalgia is not diagnosed from this result alone.
How to use your result
Review the report with the clinician who ordered it, including the units and laboratory range. Share your diet, sun exposure, medicines, kidney or liver conditions, pregnancy status and any supplements. Treatment may involve vitamin D supplementation, with the product, dose and follow-up chosen for your result and risks. Do not change a prescribed dose or combine products without checking first.
When to seek care
Arrange follow-up if the result is outside the reported range, symptoms continue, or treatment has been started without a review plan. Seek prompt care for severe weakness, repeated falls, significant bone pain, confusion, persistent vomiting or symptoms after taking an excessive amount of supplement. These problems may need assessment beyond vitamin D alone.
Questions for your doctor
What units and reference range does my report use? Does the result fit my symptoms and health history? Do I need supplementation, and when should it be reviewed? Could another condition explain my symptoms?

Questions people ask
Does a low hydroxy level prove every symptom is from vitamin D?
No. The result can support deficiency, but fatigue, pain and weakness may have several causes.
Can I choose a supplement from the result alone?
Ask a clinician to match the product and dose to the result, medicines and health conditions.
