Vitamin D function and deficiency

Short answer
Vitamin D supports calcium balance, bones and muscles; deficiency can cause weakness or bone problems and is confirmed with appropriate assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What vitamin D does
Vitamin D helps the body absorb calcium and supports normal bone and muscle function. Low levels may be associated with muscle aches, generalised weakness, fatigue or bone discomfort, although these symptoms have many possible causes. Deficiency can affect bone strength over time and may contribute to a stress fracture in some circumstances. Obesity, limited sun exposure, absorption problems and some medicines can influence vitamin D status. Frequent infections or low mood should not automatically be attributed to vitamin D.
How deficiency is checked and treated
A clinician may recommend a blood test when symptoms or risk factors make deficiency plausible. Treatment can involve a prescribed or over-the-counter supplement, with the dose and duration chosen for your result and health history. Food sources and safe outdoor activity may support overall health, but avoid taking high-dose products without advice. Tell the clinician about kidney problems, calcium disorders, pregnancy, medicines and other supplements before treatment.
When to seek care
Arrange a review for persistent weakness, bone or joint pain, repeated falls, or fatigue that limits normal activity. Seek urgent help after a significant injury, sudden inability to bear weight, severe muscle weakness, or new confusion. A fracture concern needs assessment rather than a supplement trial, because several bone and muscle conditions can look similar.
Questions for your doctor
Do my symptoms or risk factors justify testing? What result would change treatment? Which supplement and dose fit my health history? When should the level or symptoms be reviewed?

Questions people ask
Can symptoms prove vitamin D deficiency?
No. Fatigue, weakness and pain have many causes, so symptoms need context and sometimes blood testing.
Is more vitamin D always better?
No. Excess supplementation can cause harm; use a product and dose suited to your advice.
