What should you know about visual gait analysis?

Short answer
Visual gait analysis is a structured observation of walking or running that helps a clinician identify movement patterns linked with symptoms.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What is observed
A physiotherapist may watch your posture, foot contact, stride length, knee tracking, hip control, arm movement, and the way your body responds to speed or incline. They may compare both sides and observe walking barefoot and in shoes. The aim is to connect a visible pattern with your symptoms and function, not to label every difference as a problem.
Visual observation is one part of assessment. [3D Motion Capture](/technology/3d-motion-capture/) adds measured movement data, while a [Pressure Plate Gait Scanner](/technology/pressure-plate-gait-scanner/) can show how pressure moves under the feet.
Getting useful results
Wear clothes that allow the legs and feet to be seen, and bring the shoes you use for the activity that causes symptoms. Walk naturally before trying any requested correction. Mention pain, stiffness, balance changes, previous injuries, and whether symptoms appear at the start or after exertion. The clinician may use the observations to select exercises, adjust training, or consider [Custom Orthotics](/treatments/non-surgical-orthopedics/custom-orthotics/) when appropriate.
When to seek care
Book an assessment for a persistent limp, recurring activity pain, reduced balance, or a noticeable change in walking. Seek urgent help after trauma if you cannot bear weight, have a deformity, or develop sudden weakness or numbness.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which movement pattern was found, how it may relate to your symptoms, what change you should practise, and when the pattern or function will be reassessed.

Questions people ask
Can visual gait analysis diagnose an injury?
It can suggest movement patterns, but diagnosis requires a full history and physical examination and may need other tests.
Do I need special shoes for the assessment?
Usually, bring your normal activity shoes as well as any orthotics or braces you regularly use so the clinician can compare relevant conditions.
