What a pressure plate gait scanner is
A pressure plate gait scanner maps how pressure moves under your feet during standing and walking.
The device contains sensors beneath a firm platform or walkway. As you stand or take steps across it, the sensors record where load is applied and how that load shifts from the heel toward the forefoot and toes. A screen may display a pressure map, a path of the centre of pressure, or left-to-right comparisons. The scan describes foot-ground contact; it does not directly show bones, cartilage, tendons, or nerves.
How it is used in an assessment
You may be asked to stand still, walk naturally, or repeat a pass across the platform. The clinician watches your posture, stride, balance, footwear, and symptoms alongside the sensor display. The result can support decisions about exercise selection, gait retraining, footwear changes, or whether another assessment is needed.
A pressure map is more useful when it answers a specific question, such as whether pain changes the way you load one foot. It is commonly used as one component of a broader [Gait Analysis](/treatments/diagnostics-and-imaging/gait-analysis/) assessment.
Limits of the pressure map
The scanner measures contact pressure at the surface, not every force inside the leg. Speed, stride length, balance, footwear, fatigue, and attention can change the result. A single pass may not represent your usual walking. The map also cannot identify the cause of pain by itself or confirm a specific injury. Interpretation needs your history, physical examination, and observation of the whole movement pattern.
Other assessment options
A clinician may assess walking by observing you, measuring joint movement and muscle control, recording video, or using a different gait-analysis system. Imaging may be considered when the question concerns bone or deeper soft tissue. The choice depends on your symptoms and the decision the assessment is meant to support.
What the result means for you
The result may show that one foot accepts load differently from the other, or that pressure shifts toward a particular part of the foot. That finding can guide a rehabilitation discussion, but it does not mean the highlighted area is necessarily the source of pain. Your clinician should explain which observation matters for your movement and how it changes the plan.
Wear the footwear you normally use unless the clinic gives different instructions. Tell the assessor when symptoms begin, whether they change with speed or distance, and if you feel unsteady.
Safety and comfort
The test is non-invasive and usually involves standing or walking over a platform. Tell the clinician if pain, dizziness, or poor balance makes walking unsafe. You can pause between passes, and the assessment can be adapted to your mobility. The scanner does not expose you to radiation.

Questions people ask
Will the scan hurt?
The test is non-invasive, but walking may reproduce an existing symptom; tell the clinician if you need to stop or change the task.
Does a pressure map diagnose the cause of pain?
No. It provides movement information that must be considered with your symptoms and physical examination.
