What should you know about a visible diode laser?

A diode laser produces a focused beam that can be absorbed by selected structures in the skin. In hair reduction, pigment in the hair helps carry heat toward the follicle. Other diode systems and settings may be used for different clinical targets. The word visible may describe what a person sees from the device or refer to a light range; it does not by itself identify the treatment purpose. Skin tone, hair colour, hair thickness, and the treatment area affect planning.

Ask the provider to name the device, intended target, wavelength category, cooling method, and expected sensations. Share your skin tone, tanning history, tendency to scar or pigment, medicines, and any active rash. Follow instructions about sun exposure, shaving, and products. Protective eyewear should be used when directed. A qualified practitioner should test settings appropriately and explain aftercare, including what to do if blistering or prolonged irritation occurs.

Contact the treating clinic if redness becomes increasingly painful, swelling worsens, blisters form, or the treated skin develops marked lightening or darkening. Seek urgent care for severe eye pain, vision change, or a significant burn. Do not restart treatment over injured skin until it has been assessed.

Ask whether the device is intended for hair reduction or another target, how your skin and hair characteristics affect settings, and how many sessions may be discussed without promising a fixed result. Clarify alternatives, downtime, eye protection, and warning signs after treatment.
