What should you know about virus causing conjunctivitis?

A virus can inflame the thin membrane covering the white of the eye and inner eyelid. One or both eyes may become red, watery, gritty or mildly swollen. Discharge can collect around the eyelids, especially after sleep. A viral illness affecting the nose or throat may occur at the same time. Viral conjunctivitis spreads through contaminated hands, towels, cosmetics and frequently touched surfaces.

The appearance can overlap with bacterial conjunctivitis, allergy and other eye conditions. Light sensitivity, significant pain or changes in vision deserve medical assessment rather than self-diagnosis.

Wash hands often, avoid rubbing the eyes and use separate towels and pillowcases while the eye is irritated. Clean discharge gently with clean water and a fresh pad for each eye. Avoid contact lenses and eye makeup until the eye has settled. Cool compresses and preservative-free lubricating drops may ease irritation when suitable for you.

Antibiotics do not treat viruses, so antibiotic treatment is not automatically helpful. A GP Consultation can distinguish likely causes and advise on work, school or contact-lens precautions.

Get urgent eye care for moderate or severe eye pain, blurred or reduced vision, strong light sensitivity, injury, chemical exposure, or swelling that makes it difficult to open the eye. Seek medical advice promptly if a newborn is affected, symptoms are worsening, or contact-lens use is associated with pain or redness.

Ask whether the pattern fits viral conjunctivitis, how long to avoid contact lenses, which drops are suitable, and what change in vision or pain should trigger urgent review.
