What should you know about virgin bleeding after sex?

Small tears, limited lubrication, vaginal dryness and inflammation can lead to bleeding after penetration. Infections such as Chlamydia may cause bleeding through irritation of the cervix. Genitourinary Syndrome of Menopause can make genital tissues thinner and more prone to bleeding. Cervical Dysplasia, Cervical Cancer or Vaginal Cancer can also present with bleeding after sex, so this symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself.

A clinician may ask about pain, discharge, contraception, pregnancy possibility, menstrual timing and whether bleeding happens every time. Assessment can include an examination and tests for infection or cervical changes.

Arrange an appointment if bleeding is recurrent, new or not clearly explained. Note how much blood there is, when it starts, whether sex was painful and any discharge or pelvic pain. Use lubrication and pause penetration if it causes pain, but do not delay assessment to test whether symptoms disappear. Follow advice about screening and infection testing.

Seek urgent care for heavy bleeding, severe pelvic or abdominal pain, faintness, fever, weakness, or bleeding during a possible pregnancy. Emergency help is appropriate if you feel unstable. Otherwise, arrange prompt review for recurrent bleeding, bleeding with foul-smelling discharge or symptoms that are worsening.

Ask whether the bleeding could be from dryness, infection or the cervix; which tests are appropriate; and when results will be ready. If cervical cells need further assessment, ask whether a Cone Biopsy is relevant and what the procedure involves.
