How long does viral labyrinthitis last?

Labyrinthitis affects the inner ear, which helps control hearing and balance. Inflammation can produce spinning vertigo, nausea, unsteadiness and sometimes ringing in the ears or hearing change. The strongest symptoms may begin suddenly; the brain then gradually adapts to the altered balance signals.

Recovery is not identical for everyone. Turning the head, walking in busy places or moving from lying to standing may remain difficult after the spinning settles. A recent cold can precede the illness, but dizziness has several possible causes, so a clinician may need to check whether the inner ear is responsible.

During the acute phase, rest in a safe position, move slowly and keep pathways clear. Sip fluids if nausea allows, and avoid driving, heights, swimming alone or operating machinery while vertigo affects you. Once movement is safe, gentle walking and normal head movements can help the balance system readjust; avoid staying in bed for longer than needed.

A GP consultation can review your ears, nerves, medicines and symptoms. Short-term treatment may be considered for severe nausea or vertigo, while persistent imbalance may benefit from vestibular rehabilitation exercises guided by a professional.

Get emergency help for new facial weakness, difficulty speaking, one-sided weakness or numbness, severe new headache, fainting, chest pain or inability to walk safely. These features can indicate a problem beyond the inner ear.

Arrange prompt assessment for new hearing loss, severe ear pain, repeated vomiting, worsening symptoms, or dizziness that is not gradually improving. Seek advice before driving or returning to work at height if balance remains unreliable.
