What should you know about viral gastroenteritis contagious?

Gastroenteritis inflames the stomach and bowel, causing nausea, vomiting, diarrhoea, abdominal pain, fever and loss of appetite. Tiny amounts of infected vomit or stool can reach hands, toilets, taps, phones, food or shared objects. Some viruses spread readily in households, schools and care settings. Rotavirus Infection is one possible cause. Symptoms such as Diarrhoea, Nausea, Fever and Abdominal Pain can have other causes, so a symptom pattern does not identify the virus by itself.

Wash hands thoroughly with soap and water after using the toilet, cleaning vomit or stool, and before preparing food. Alcohol hand gel may not work well against every stomach virus. Clean contaminated bathroom and touch surfaces with a suitable disinfectant, wash soiled laundry separately and do not share towels or utensils. Avoid preparing food for other people while ill and follow local workplace or school guidance before returning. Sip oral rehydration fluid or other suitable drinks regularly; small amounts can be easier after vomiting. Avoid dehydration by responding early to thirst, dizziness, dry mouth or reduced urine.

Seek urgent help for severe dehydration, fainting, confusion, blood in vomit or stool, severe constant abdominal pain, a stiff neck or difficulty breathing. Arrange prompt assessment if vomiting prevents drinking, diarrhoea is persistent, urine becomes very scant, or a baby, older adult, pregnant person or person with a significant medical condition becomes unwell. Medical advice is also appropriate when symptoms are worsening rather than easing or when several people became ill after a shared meal or setting.
