What should you know about Vicks for cough?

A cough is a protective reflex that moves mucus or irritants out of the airways. Common causes include a cold, acute bronchitis, allergic rhinitis, asthma, acid reflux and a cough that persists after an infection. Bronchiolitis affects babies and young children, while bronchiectasis and other conditions need clinical assessment. A chest rub may create a cooling or warming sensation, but that sensation is not proof that the airway problem is improving.

Read the product label and follow its age instructions. Apply only where directed, usually to intact skin; do not swallow it, put it in the nose or mouth, or use it on damaged skin. Keep it away from eyes and wash your hands after application. Fluids, warm drinks and avoiding smoke can also reduce irritation. Children under the stated age limit should not use products intended for older children or adults.

Get urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, coughing blood, choking, confusion or sudden swelling. Arrange medical review if the cough is worsening, disrupts sleep repeatedly, comes with chest pain or wheezing, or does not settle as expected. A persistent cough needs its cause assessed rather than repeated use of a soothing rub.
