What should you know about a veterinary ECG machine?

An ECG, or electrocardiogram, traces electrical signals as they move through the heart. Adhesive electrodes are placed on the skin, and the machine displays or prints wave patterns. A clinician looks at the rate, rhythm and timing of those signals. The recording can support assessment of palpitations, fainting, chest discomfort or an irregular pulse, but it is one part of the clinical picture. Wear clothing that allows access to the chest, and tell the clinician about medicines, implanted devices and recent symptoms. The skin may be cleaned so electrodes stay attached. Try to remain still and breathe normally while the tracing is taken; muscle movement can add interference. The test is generally brief, but the clinician may repeat a lead or recording if the signal is unclear. An ECG does not show every heart problem, so additional examination or testing may be discussed.

Seek urgent help for chest pressure, severe breathlessness, collapse, fainting with ongoing symptoms, or a fast or irregular heartbeat accompanied by weakness or dizziness. Do not wait for a routine ECG if symptoms are severe or continuing. If symptoms have settled but recur, arrange a clinical review and record what you felt, what you were doing and how long it lasted.

Ask what the tracing showed, whether the rhythm was regular, whether another recording is needed, and how your symptoms affect the interpretation. Ask which medicines or stimulants could influence the rhythm and what warning signs should lead you to seek urgent care.
