What should you know about a very small lump on the neck?

Neck lumps can involve a lymph node, the thyroid, a salivary gland, skin, or nearby soft tissue. A lymph node may enlarge while the immune system responds to a throat, ear, dental, or skin problem. The lump may be tender during an infection and settle as the irritation improves.

Some lumps are not painful. A clinician considers whether it is soft or firm, mobile or fixed, single or part of a group, and whether it sits under the jaw, along the side of the neck, or near the thyroid. A neck lump can be a presentation of head and neck cancer, lymphoma, thyroid cancer, or cancer of unknown primary, but a lump alone cannot identify its cause.

Note when you first felt it, whether it changes in size, and any recent infection, dental treatment, skin injury, or new medicine. Avoid repeatedly pressing it, because irritation can make the area sore. Arrange a medical assessment if it persists, grows, feels firm or fixed, or has no clear explanation. The clinician may examine your mouth, throat, ears, thyroid, and lymph-node areas, then decide whether observation, imaging, blood tests, or sampling is appropriate.

Seek urgent help for trouble breathing, difficulty swallowing saliva, rapidly increasing swelling, or a new lump with severe illness. Contact a clinician promptly for a persistent neck lump, unexplained weight loss, drenching night sweats, persistent fever, voice change, coughing blood, or pain that does not settle. These features do not diagnose cancer, but they warrant timely evaluation.

Ask: Where is the lump arising from? What features make a lymph node, thyroid lump, or another cause more likely? How long should I monitor it? Would an ultrasound or other test help? Which changes should prompt an earlier review?
