Very dark, cloudy urine: what to know

Low fluid intake, sweating, fever, or vomiting can make urine darker and stronger-smelling. Cloudiness may also come from urinary crystals, mucus, blood, or white blood cells. A urinary tract infection may cause burning, urgency, frequent urination, lower abdominal discomfort, or cloudy urine. If infection reaches the kidneys, fever, chills, nausea, and pain in the side or back may develop. Dehydration can coexist with infection, so colour alone cannot identify the cause.

Drink fluids regularly if you can do so safely, and observe whether urine becomes lighter as hydration improves. Do not use leftover antibiotics or delay testing when burning, urgency, blood, or an unusual smell is present. A clinician may request a urine sample and choose treatment based on the symptoms and findings. Note the onset, urine colour, pain location, fever, and any pregnancy possibility before the appointment.

Seek urgent medical care for dark cloudy urine with fever, shaking chills, vomiting, pain in the back or side, confusion, faintness, or inability to keep fluids down. These features can occur with a kidney infection or significant dehydration. Blood in urine, severe pain, or very little urine also warrants prompt assessment. Pregnant people with urinary symptoms should contact their maternity or medical team promptly.

Ask whether a urine test is needed, whether the pattern fits a urinary tract infection or kidney infection, and how much fluid is suitable for you. Mention medicines, recent illness, heat exposure, new discharge, pregnancy, and any change in urine volume.
