Venous Lake on the Ear: What to Know

The spot may look blue, violet, or dark red, and it can feel soft or compressible. It may become more noticeable when the ear is warm or when you bend forward because blood temporarily fills the widened vessel. A venous lake can occur on the rim, outer surface, or nearby ear skin. It is generally a benign vascular change, but a new or changing dark spot should be examined because several skin lesions can look similar.

A clinician may inspect the colour, borders, texture, and response to gentle pressure. They may ask when it appeared, whether it bleeds after minor knocks, and whether its shape or shade has changed.

Avoid picking, squeezing, or repeatedly rubbing the area, especially if it catches on glasses, masks, headphones, or jewellery. Use sun protection on exposed ear skin, since ultraviolet exposure can make vascular and pigmented spots more noticeable. Arrange a routine dermatology assessment if the diagnosis has not been confirmed or if the appearance bothers you.

If treatment is wanted, a dermatologist can discuss options that target the abnormal vessel. Electrosurgery is one treatment approach that may be considered after examination.

Seek prompt medical advice if the spot starts bleeding without a clear injury, develops a persistent crust or sore, becomes painful, grows, or changes colour or outline. Get urgent help for bleeding that does not stop after firm continuous pressure, or for swelling that affects hearing, the ear canal, or breathing.
