What should you know about VCSEL laser diode?

VCSEL means vertical-cavity surface-emitting laser. Unlike a broad lamp, it produces organised laser light from a semiconductor device. In dermatology, the relevant wavelength, pulse pattern, cooling method, and handpiece determine how energy reaches the skin; the device name alone does not predict the outcome.

For hair removal, light is absorbed by pigment in the hair shaft and follicle, creating heat that can reduce the follicle’s ability to produce hair. Hair colour, thickness, skin tone, body area, hormones, and the treatment settings all influence suitability.

At consultation, disclose tanning, pigment changes, active rashes, medicines that increase light sensitivity, a history of scarring, and previous laser reactions. Avoid plucking or waxing when instructed, because the follicle needs to be present for hair-removal treatment.

After treatment, mild warmth, redness, or swelling around follicles can occur. Keep the skin cool as advised, avoid picking, use sun protection, and follow the clinic’s product instructions. A qualified clinician should select settings and protect the surrounding skin.

Call the treating clinic if pain worsens, blisters form, swelling spreads, or the skin becomes increasingly tender or discoloured. Seek medical care for signs of infection such as pus, spreading redness, or fever.

Ask what wavelength and cooling system the device uses, whether it suits your hair and skin characteristics, how patch testing is handled, what preparation is needed, and which aftercare products are appropriate.
