What should you know about a Vcardia ECG machine?

An ECG machine receives signals from electrodes placed on the chest and limbs and displays them as a tracing. Clinicians can examine the rhythm, heart rate, timing of electrical signals and patterns that may suggest strain or reduced blood flow. The recording is a snapshot: a normal tracing does not explain every episode of palpitations, and an unusual tracing does not identify the cause on its own. Interpretation depends on symptoms, medical history, medicines and comparison with earlier recordings when available.

Wear clothing that allows access to the chest and lower limbs. The skin may be cleaned, and small areas may need hair trimming so electrodes adhere. Lie still and breathe normally while the machine records; talking or moving can create artefacts. The test is generally brief and does not send electricity into your body. Tell the clinician if the adhesive irritates your skin or if you feel unwell. Ask how you will receive the interpretation and whether further monitoring is needed for intermittent symptoms.

Call emergency services for chest pressure or pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, sudden collapse, or palpitations with marked dizziness. Do not drive yourself if you feel seriously unwell. Arrange prompt clinical review for repeated palpitations, unexplained fainting or a new reduction in exercise tolerance, even if an earlier ECG was reassuring.

Ask what the tracing shows, whether the rhythm was captured during your symptoms, if medicines or electrolytes could affect it, and whether you need an echocardiogram, blood tests or longer heart monitoring.
