VBAC birth after a C-section: what to know

VBAC means giving birth through the vagina after a previous caesarean. The type and location of the earlier uterine incision matter, as do other operations, the reason for the caesarean, the baby’s position, the placenta and your current health. Bring your previous operative report if it is available, and discuss your birth preferences early in pregnancy. Ask where continuous fetal monitoring, anaesthesia, blood transfusion support and emergency surgery are available. Your clinician may review whether labour should start on its own or whether Induction of Labour is appropriate. Make a plan for travel, a support person and what would happen if vaginal birth is no longer advised.

Contact your maternity unit promptly when contractions become regular, your waters break, you have vaginal bleeding, or you notice reduced fetal movement. During labour, seek immediate help for severe or persistent abdominal pain, faintness, heavy bleeding or a sudden change in contractions. Ask which uterine incision you had, whether your medical history changes the options, how labour will be monitored, and what findings would lead to caesarean birth. Also ask how induction, pain relief and newborn support are handled at your chosen hospital.
