What oxytocin is
Oxytocin is a natural hormone that stimulates uterine contractions during labour and after birth.
It is made in the brain and released into the bloodstream. During labour, it helps the uterus contract in a coordinated pattern. After birth, contractions help the uterus become firm and can help limit bleeding. A manufactured form can be given by healthcare professionals when contractions need to be started, strengthened or supported.
How oxytocin works
Oxytocin acts on receptors in the muscle of the uterus. Its effect depends on the dose, the timing and how the medicine is given. In hospital, it is commonly delivered through a vein with careful observation of contractions and the baby’s heart rate. The infusion can be adjusted or stopped when the clinical team decides that is appropriate.
Where oxytocin is used
Oxytocin may be used during Induction of Labour to help contractions begin, or during labour when contractions are not progressing as intended. It can also be used after a Vaginal Delivery or Caesarean Section to encourage the uterus to contract. The reason for use and monitoring plan should be explained by the maternity team.
Possible alternatives
The alternative depends on why support is needed. Options may include waiting with observation, other methods to prepare the cervix, medicines with a different action, or a planned birth procedure. Your maternity team weighs examination findings, the baby’s condition, contraction pattern and your preferences before recommending a route.
What this means for you
If oxytocin is recommended, expect continuous or frequent monitoring of contractions and the baby’s heart rate. Tell the team about severe pain between contractions, contractions that feel too close together, bleeding, breathlessness, chest pain or a sudden change in how you feel. Do not change an infusion yourself; the maternity team controls it and responds to the monitoring.
Safety during treatment
Oxytocin is used under maternity supervision because contractions that are too strong or too frequent can affect the uterus and the baby’s oxygen supply. The team may alter the infusion, give other care or recommend a different birth plan if monitoring changes. After birth, staff continue checking uterine firmness and bleeding, especially when oxytocin was given to support recovery.
