What should you know about vasculitis spots on skin?

Skin-limited vasculitis may appear as red, purple, or brownish dots and patches that do not fade when pressed. Some lesions feel raised, tender, or itchy, and they often occur on the lower legs. Similar-looking changes can follow infection, medication exposure, injury, or other skin conditions, so appearance alone cannot establish the cause.

Arrange a dermatology or medical review for unexplained non-blanching spots. Photograph changes in natural light, note when they began, and bring a list of recent medicines, supplements, infections, and new products. Avoid scratching and do not start steroid or antibiotic creams without advice. A clinician may examine the skin and decide whether blood or urine testing, or a skin sample, is appropriate.

Seek urgent care if spots appear rapidly with fever, severe pain, weakness, breathing trouble, abdominal pain, blood in urine, swelling, confusion, or sores on the skin. These symptoms can signal inflammation beyond the skin and should not be judged by the number of spots alone.

Ask whether the pattern blanches, whether a medicine or infection could be involved, what tests are needed, and which changes should prompt immediate review.
