Varicella titer: what the blood test can show

The test looks for antibodies to varicella-zoster virus in a blood sample. A result reported as positive, negative, or equivocal is read against the laboratory's reference range. A positive result may support immunity from past infection or vaccination, while a negative or unclear result does not by itself explain every rash or confirm that infection is impossible. The test is different from examining active blisters or diagnosing shingles from symptoms.

Tell the clinician why testing was requested, whether you remember chickenpox, and which vaccines you have received. Share the full laboratory report rather than only the headline result, because wording and reference ranges matter. If the result does not show immunity, a clinician can discuss records, vaccination, repeat testing, or another explanation. A titer is not a substitute for urgent assessment. Seek care for breathing difficulty, confusion, severe headache, dehydration, or a rapidly worsening illness. Contact a clinician promptly for fever with new skin blisters, especially during pregnancy or when immunity is weakened.
