What causes varicella?

After entering the body, the virus can produce fever, tiredness and an itchy rash that changes into fluid-filled blisters. A person can pass the virus to someone who has not developed immunity. The same virus can remain inactive in nerve tissue and later reactivate as shingles; chickenpox and shingles are related but distinct conditions.

Avoid close contact with pregnant people, newborns and anyone with a weakened immune system until a clinician confirms that transmission is no longer a concern. Keep the rash clean, avoid scratching, and use medicines only as advised.
