What should you know about Varian radiotherapy?

Radiotherapy uses high-energy radiation to damage cancer cells in a selected area. A treatment team combines scans, examination findings, and information about the tumour to outline the target and protect nearby organs as far as possible. Equipment may deliver radiation from several angles while you remain in a planned position. The machine is operated by trained staff and does not replace the judgement of your radiation oncologist.

Radiotherapy can be used to treat a tumour, reduce the chance of cancer returning in a treated region, or ease symptoms such as pain or pressure. The effects depend on the body area, dose pattern, other treatments, and your health. Tiredness and changes in the treated skin are possible; effects involving swallowing, bowel function, urination, or the brain depend on the site.

Attend the planning appointment and tell the team if you have trouble lying flat, holding a position, or managing enclosed spaces. Ask whether you need a full bladder, an empty stomach, or another preparation for your site. Keep appointments, take medicines exactly as advised, and protect treated skin from rubbing and strong heat. Arrange help with meals, transport, or childcare if tiredness or site-specific symptoms make usual tasks harder.

Contact the treatment team for fever, worsening pain, inability to drink, persistent vomiting, severe diarrhoea, bleeding, open skin, or a symptom that changes quickly. After treatment to the head or brain, report new weakness, confusion, severe headache, or a seizure urgently. Severe breathing difficulty or loss of consciousness requires emergency care.
