What should you know about Varian proton therapy?

Your team uses imaging to map the target and the organs around it. Treatment planners then choose the beam direction, energy, and shape needed for the plan. Protons travel into the body and release their greatest planned dose at a selected depth, after which the dose falls away. This physical feature can be useful when sensitive structures lie close to a tumour, but it does not make treatment appropriate for everyone.

Each visit includes positioning checks. You may need a custom support or mask so the target is in the planned place. The treatment room can be quiet but large, and staff can see and speak with you. Possible effects vary by treatment site and may include tiredness, local skin irritation, swelling, or changes in nearby organ function.

Bring a complete medicine list and mention implanted metal or electronic devices, pregnancy or possible pregnancy, allergies, and previous radiation. Ask how many planning visits are needed, whether you can eat and drink normally, and what support is available if you feel anxious in the treatment position. Protect the treated skin from friction and unapproved creams. Keep a simple record of new symptoms, their timing, and what makes them better or worse.

Call your treatment team if a symptom is new, persistent, or interfering with eating, drinking, sleep, movement, or prescribed medicines. Report fever, increasing redness, open skin, uncontrolled pain, repeated vomiting, or new neurological symptoms without waiting for the next routine visit. Emergency help is appropriate for severe breathlessness, a seizure, sudden confusion, or sudden weakness.
