Proton Therapy System Explained

A proton therapy system accelerates protons and directs them into a planned target so radiation can be concentrated within a selected depth.

Specialists first create an individual plan using scans and calculations. During a session, you are positioned with supports and may have an immobilisation device for a precise target. Imaging can check alignment before the beam is delivered. The beam deposits much of its energy at a chosen depth, and planning aims to reduce dose beyond that point while accounting for movement and tissue changes.

Proton therapy is not suitable for every tumour or body site. The advantage depends on the target’s depth, shape, movement, and nearby organs, as well as the available treatment plan. The beam can still affect healthy tissue along its path, and treatment can cause side effects. Changes in weight, swelling, or anatomy may require review of the plan.

Conventional external-beam treatment uses high-energy X-rays and can be shaped from several directions. Proton therapy uses charged particles with a different depth-dose pattern. Your radiation oncologist compares plans for target coverage and exposure to nearby organs rather than choosing by machine type alone. Practical factors, including access to a suitable centre, may also matter.

You may attend a planning visit before regular sessions begin. Positioning is repeated carefully at each visit, and the room may be large because the accelerator and beamline require substantial equipment. Tell the team if pain, claustrophobia, or difficulty staying still could affect setup. Ask which organs are being protected and what symptoms should prompt a call.

The treatment team verifies the plan and your position before delivery. You do not carry radioactive material after proton treatment. As with other radiation treatments, side effects depend on the treated area and dose distribution. Report new or worsening symptoms according to the instructions from your oncology team.
