What should you know about vacuum cupping therapy?

Short answer
Vacuum cupping therapy uses suction on the skin and may temporarily ease muscle discomfort, but it does not diagnose or cure the underlying cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

How vacuum cupping works
During dry cupping, a practitioner places cups on the skin and creates a vacuum that gently lifts the skin and superficial tissues. The suction can leave circular marks, tenderness, or a bruised appearance for several days. These marks are not proof that toxins have been removed or that a disease has been identified.
Some people seek cupping for back muscle spasm or upper-back pain. Any relief may be short-lived and can vary between people. Cupping should sit alongside an assessment of posture, workload, injury, nerve symptoms, and general movement rather than replace care for a significant problem.
Using it thoughtfully
Choose a trained practitioner who explains the procedure, checks your health history, uses clean equipment, and obtains consent. Tell them about blood-thinning medicines, bleeding problems, diabetes, skin disease, pregnancy, reduced sensation, or poor wound healing. Do not place cups over broken, infected, inflamed, or numb skin.
Ask how the treatment fits with exercise, physiotherapy, or other care. Keep the area clean, avoid vigorous rubbing of the marks, and monitor the skin. Wet cupping involves skin piercing and carries additional concerns, including bleeding and infection; it requires especially careful hygiene and medical discussion.
When to seek care
Contact a clinician if a mark becomes increasingly red, hot, swollen, painful, or starts draining, or if you develop fever. Seek urgent help for heavy bleeding, facial swelling, breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly spreading skin changes. New weakness, loss of bladder or bowel control, chest pain, or severe unexplained back pain should not be treated with cupping alone.
Questions for your doctor
Ask: What is causing my pain or spasm? Is cupping suitable with my medicines and skin health? Would physiotherapy or another treatment address the cause? How should the skin be cared for afterward? Which changes require prompt review?

Questions people ask
Are circular cupping marks burns?
They are usually suction-related skin discoloration, but blistering, severe pain, or worsening redness needs assessment.
Can cupping replace physiotherapy?
No. It may be considered comfort care, while physiotherapy can address movement, strength, and contributing habits.
