Can you have a UTI when urine is not cloudy?

Cloudiness may come from cells, mucus, crystals or other changes in urine, but its absence does not rule out infection. Burning when passing urine, needing to urinate often, an urgent need to go, lower abdominal discomfort or blood in the urine can be more useful clues. These symptoms can also have causes other than infection, so they do not confirm a diagnosis on their own.

Urine that is very pale may simply reflect good fluid intake. Dark urine, a dry mouth or dizziness can occur with dehydration. A clinician may use your symptoms and a urine test to decide whether treatment is needed.

Arrange medical advice if urinary symptoms persist, interfere with normal activities or keep returning. Drink fluids regularly unless you have been told to restrict them, and do not use leftover antibiotics or someone else’s prescription. A clinician can choose the appropriate test and explain whether an antibiotic is suitable.

Seek urgent medical advice for fever, chills, pain in the side or back, vomiting, confusion, faintness or feeling markedly unwell. These features can occur when an infection affects the kidneys or when dehydration is developing. Blood in the urine, pregnancy, childhood, older age or a weakened immune system also warrant prompt professional assessment.
