UTI and miscarriage: what to know

A UTI commonly causes burning during urination, urgency, frequent urination, cloudy or strong-smelling urine, and pressure low in the abdomen. Miscarriage may involve vaginal bleeding, period-like or stronger cramps, passing tissue or fluid, and a change in pregnancy symptoms. A UTI symptom does not prove that a miscarriage is happening, and pregnancy bleeding should not be dismissed as urinary infection.

The clinician may ask where blood is seen, check vital signs, test urine, and assess the pregnancy. A Transvaginal Ultrasound may be used to examine the uterus and pregnancy when clinically appropriate. The results guide whether infection care, pregnancy follow-up, or both are needed.

Contact your maternity or gynaecology service when symptoms begin. Describe urine changes, vaginal bleeding, cramps, fever, side or back pain, and how far along the pregnancy is. Do not take leftover antibiotics or start medicines recommended for someone else; treatment should account for pregnancy and allergies.

Seek emergency help for heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided pain, faintness, shoulder-tip pain, fever, chills, vomiting, confusion, or back or side pain. Prompt assessment matters because these signs may indicate a pregnancy complication, a kidney infection, or another condition needing immediate care.
