UTI after miscarriage: what to know

After a miscarriage, pelvic soreness and vaginal bleeding can overlap with urinary symptoms. Burning while passing urine, needing to go often, passing only small amounts, or urine that smells unusually strong can fit a UTI. Fever, chills, pain in the side or back, or feeling markedly unwell can suggest infection beyond the bladder. Bleeding from the vagina is not the same as blood in urine, so tell the clinician where you see blood.

A clinician may ask about the miscarriage, examine you, and test a urine sample. Depending on how the miscarriage was managed and how you are recovering, they may also consider whether retained pregnancy tissue or another pelvic problem needs checking. Contact your gynaecology team or a primary-care clinician for advice, especially if urinary symptoms began after a procedure or medication. Drink normally, avoid delaying urination, and use only pain relief that is suitable for you. Do not use leftover antibiotics; the correct medicine depends on your symptoms, urine findings, allergies, and pregnancy-related care.

Keep track of fever, pain, urine changes, vaginal bleeding, and any medicines taken. If your miscarriage was managed with medication or surgery, follow the specific aftercare instructions you were given.

Seek urgent medical help for fever or chills, worsening lower abdominal pain, pain in the back or side, vomiting, faintness, confusion, or feeling very unwell. Heavy vaginal bleeding, severe pain, or foul-smelling discharge after miscarriage also needs prompt assessment because these symptoms may indicate a post-miscarriage complication rather than a simple UTI.
