What should you know about US-guided biopsy?

Ultrasound helps the clinician see the target and choose a safe path for the needle. The skin is cleaned and local anaesthetic may numb the area. A small sample is then taken, sometimes in several passes, and sent to a laboratory. A biopsy can show whether cells are benign, inflammatory, or cancerous and may provide details that help classify a tumour. Laboratory work can include immunohistochemistry, which uses markers to identify cell features. Results may take several days because the tissue needs preparation and review.

Tell the team about medicines, allergies, bleeding problems, pregnancy, and any infection near the planned site. Follow the clinic's instructions about eating, drinking, and medicines. Wear comfortable clothing and arrange help if the sampled area or sedative could affect normal activity. Afterward, keep the dressing clean, avoid strenuous activity for the advised period, and use only pain relief approved for you. Ask how and when results will be shared; a result may lead to further imaging or treatment planning.

Contact the clinical team promptly for bleeding that does not settle with firm pressure, increasing swelling, worsening pain, fever, spreading redness, pus, or new weakness or numbness. Seek urgent help for severe breathing difficulty, fainting, or rapidly worsening symptoms. These signs can have causes unrelated to cancer, but they need assessment after a procedure.

Ask what area will be sampled, whether local anaesthetic or sedation is planned, how to manage regular medicines, when to expect the report, and whether imaging such as an MRI scan or genomic tumour profiling may be considered afterward.
