A screening recommendation concerns people who may not have symptoms, while a person with symptoms needs a clinical assessment. Lung cancer is not diagnosed from a cough or an imaging finding alone. Doctors may use scans, tissue sampling, and laboratory analysis to identify the type and extent of disease.

Genomic tumour profiling can look for changes that help guide medicine choices in some cancers. Treatment depends on the tumour, its location, spread, overall health, and personal goals. Options may include surgery such as lung lobectomy, radiotherapy, chemotherapy, or other systemic care. Palliative care can be added at any stage to relieve symptoms and support quality of life.

Share smoking history, workplace or environmental exposures, previous scans, medicines, and symptoms with the clinician. Ask what the proposed test is meant to answer and how quickly results are expected. If cancer is diagnosed, request a clear explanation of stage, pathology, molecular findings, treatment aim, and alternatives.

Stopping tobacco exposure can support lung health at any point. Ask for help with nicotine withdrawal or other barriers. Bring a trusted person to appointments if that helps you remember information and weigh choices.

Arrange prompt medical review for a persistent cough, coughing blood, unexplained weight change, chest pain, breathlessness, or a hoarse voice that does not settle. Seek emergency help for severe breathing difficulty, blue lips, confusion, or heavy bleeding. These symptoms can have causes other than lung cancer, but urgent problems should not wait for routine screening.
