Duct tape may be tried as a home measure for a confirmed wart, but it can irritate skin and is not suitable for every growth.

What the tape approach involves

The method covers a wart to protect it from friction and may soften the thick surface when the covering is removed. Evidence for this approach is mixed, and improvement may be slow or absent. Tape can also cause redness, itching, a rash, or a raw area, especially on delicate skin.

Warts are caused by a viral infection in the outer skin. A rough bump is not automatically a wart: corns, calluses, molluscum, and other lesions can look similar. Do not use a home method on a changing, bleeding, very painful, or uncertain lesion.

Have the growth identified first if you are unsure. Keep the surrounding skin dry and stop if burning, blistering, marked redness, or broken skin develops. Do not share towels, nail tools, or footwear, and avoid picking or cutting the wart because this can spread virus to nearby skin.
