USG dating scan

USG means ultrasonography. A dating scan may show the pregnancy’s location, whether more than one pregnancy is present and whether development matches the expected stage. Measurements help estimate gestational age, particularly when the last menstrual period is uncertain or cycles are irregular.

The scan may be performed over the abdomen or with a vaginal probe, depending on how early the pregnancy is and what view is needed. Early findings can be limited when the pregnancy is very early, so the clinician may recommend a repeat scan or blood tests rather than draw a conclusion from one unclear image.

Bring the date of your last menstrual period, information about cycle length and any previous scan reports. Follow the clinic’s bladder instructions; requirements differ by scan method and pregnancy stage. Wear clothing that allows the abdomen to be examined comfortably.

Tell the sonographer about pain, bleeding, fertility treatment or a previous ectopic pregnancy. Ask when the report will be explained and how the estimated due date will be used for later appointments. Do not wait for a routine scan if you have heavy bleeding, severe or one-sided abdominal pain, shoulder-tip pain, fainting, dizziness or sudden weakness. Contact urgent maternity or emergency services because these symptoms need prompt assessment in early pregnancy.
