What should you know about urine test kits?

Many kits use a dipstick to look for markers such as blood, protein, glucose, ketones, white cells or nitrites. The exact pads and colour-reading times vary by product. A positive pad is a clue rather than a diagnosis; a negative result may also miss infection or another problem, especially if the sample is diluted or the timing is wrong.

Cloudy urine, burning, frequent urination, fever or side pain need attention even when a home strip looks normal. Urinary tract infection symptoms can overlap with other causes, while kidney infection can become serious without prompt care.

Use an in-date kit, wash your hands, collect a clean midstream sample and follow the packet timing exactly. Compare the strip in good light, record the result and avoid interpreting colours after the stated window. Do not use a home result to choose or stop antibiotic treatment. Share the result with a clinician if it is abnormal or your symptoms continue.

Contact a clinician for blood in urine, painful urination, persistent abnormal readings or symptoms that do not settle. Seek urgent care for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness or inability to pass urine. Get advice early if you are pregnant, have kidney disease, or have a condition or medicine that affects immunity or bleeding.
