What should you know about urine keeps leaking out?

Short answer
Urine that keeps leaking out is urinary incontinence and deserves assessment to find its pattern and cause.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- Medical term
- Urinary incontinence
- Useful record
- A bladder diary with triggers and timing
- Prompt review
- Blood, fever, painful urination, or inability to pass urine
What ongoing leakage can mean
Leakage may happen with coughing, laughing, lifting, or exercise; this is often called stress incontinence. A sudden urge followed by leakage fits urge incontinence. Dribbling, difficulty starting, or a weak stream can occur when the bladder does not empty well. Temporary leakage can also accompany a urinary tract infection, constipation, reduced mobility, or medicines that increase urine production.
The symptom does not identify one diagnosis by itself. A clinician may ask when leakage occurs, how often you pass urine, whether there is burning or blood, and whether you feel the bladder empties. Conditions such as obesity, Type 2 Diabetes, dementia, or Benign Prostatic Hyperplasia can affect bladder control in some people.
What you can do now
Keep a brief bladder diary: record drinks, toilet visits, urgency, leakage, and triggers. Drink regularly rather than severely restricting fluids, and reduce drinks that clearly worsen urgency, such as caffeine. Do not stop prescribed medicines without advice. Pelvic floor exercises may help some types of leakage when taught correctly; a clinician or continence physiotherapist can guide you. Use absorbent products for comfort while arranging an appointment.
When to seek care
Arrange medical review if leakage is new, persistent, troublesome, or affecting sleep, work, skin, or daily activities. Seek prompt care for fever, painful urination, blood in the urine, new back or side pain, vomiting, or inability to pass urine. Sudden leakage with new weakness, numbness, confusion, or loss of bowel control needs urgent assessment.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which type of leakage your pattern suggests, whether a urine test or bladder scan is needed, and which exercises or treatments fit your health. Mention recent childbirth, surgery, prostate symptoms, constipation, neurological problems, and every medicine or supplement you use.

Questions people ask
Is ongoing urine leakage normal?
It is common but should not be ignored when it is new, persistent, or affecting daily life, because treatable causes may be present.
Should I drink less to prevent leaks?
Severe fluid restriction can irritate the bladder and cause dehydration; drink regularly and discuss a suitable amount with a clinician.
