Very cloudy urine: what to know

Marked cloudiness may reflect concentrated urine, crystals, mucus, or cells. It may also occur when a urinary tract infection causes inflammatory material to enter the urine; this condition can present with burning, urgency, frequent urination, or lower abdominal discomfort. A kidney infection can present with cloudy urine and more systemic symptoms such as fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back. If the urine is freshly passed and remains very cloudy, arrange a clinical assessment rather than relying on appearance alone. Note the onset, smell, colour, frequency, burning, pain, and any blood. Drink fluids normally if you can and have not been given a restriction. Do not take leftover antibiotics or someone else's medicine. A clinician may ask for a urine sample and may consider your symptoms, medical history, pregnancy status, and recent medicines. Dehydration can contribute when urine is also dark and concentrated.

Seek prompt care for fever, shaking chills, side or back pain, vomiting, confusion, or feeling very unwell. Get urgent help if you cannot pass urine, have severe pain, or cannot keep fluids down. Contact a clinician promptly if blood is visible, symptoms are worsening, or the change occurs during pregnancy. These warning signs matter even if the cloudiness began recently.
