What should you know about urine being cloudy?

Urine can look hazy after you have not drunk enough fluids, and it may clear as hydration improves. Crystals, cells, mucus, or semen can also alter its appearance. Cloudiness accompanied by burning, urgency, frequent urination, an unusual smell, or lower abdominal discomfort can occur with a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, nausea, or pain in the side or back can point to infection involving the kidney. Cloudy urine alone does not identify its cause.

Notice whether the change persists and record related symptoms, including pain, fever, urinary frequency, or visible blood. Drink fluids regularly unless a clinician has given you a fluid restriction. Do not start leftover antibiotics: treatment depends on the examination and, when needed, a urine test. A clinician may ask for a clean-catch sample to check for infection or other urinary findings.

Arrange medical advice if cloudiness continues, returns often, or occurs with burning, urgency, blood, or significant discomfort. Seek urgent care for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, marked weakness, or difficulty passing urine. Pregnancy, kidney disease, or reduced immunity lowers the threshold for prompt assessment.

Ask what may be causing the change, whether a urine test is appropriate, and which symptoms should prompt same-day care. Mention when it began, whether it varies during the day, your fluid intake, medicines, and any recent urinary symptoms.
