What to do when urine becomes cloudy

Cloudiness may appear after urine becomes concentrated or when crystals, mucus, cells, or blood are present. Burning, urgency, frequent urination, pelvic pressure, or an unpleasant smell may accompany a urinary tract infection. Fever, chills, vomiting, or pain beneath the ribs or in the back can indicate kidney involvement. A recent change in appearance is worth describing, but it cannot diagnose a condition without context or testing.

Note the first time you noticed the change and whether it is present in a fresh sample. Drink according to thirst and your usual medical advice; avoid excessive fluid intake if you have a restriction. Arrange a clinical review if cloudiness repeats or comes with urinary discomfort. A clinician may ask for a clean sample before deciding on treatment, and antibiotics should be used only when prescribed.

Seek medical advice for repeated cloudy urine, visible blood, painful urination, new urgency, or difficulty passing urine. Get urgent care for fever with back or side pain, vomiting, confusion, severe pain, or feeling faint or markedly weak. These symptoms can accompany a kidney infection or urinary obstruction and require prompt evaluation.
