What should you know about urinalysis cloudy urine?

Urine can look cloudy when it is concentrated, contains crystals or salts, or mixes with mucus and cells. Bacteria and white blood cells may occur with a Urinary Tract Infection, while fever and side or back pain raise concern for a Kidney Infection. A sample can also look cloudy because of discharge or collection contamination. The appearance is a clue, not a diagnosis, and it cannot show the cause on its own.

Notice whether the change settles after normal hydration and whether symptoms are present. Do not force fluids if you have been told to restrict them. If cloudiness persists or returns, arrange a Urine Test or clinical review. For a sample, follow clean-catch instructions and provide it promptly. Avoid leftover antibiotics: the right treatment depends on the cause, and some cloudy samples do not represent infection.

Get prompt care for cloudy urine with fever, chills, flank or abdominal pain, vomiting, blood in the urine, or feeling very unwell. Painful urination and new difficulty passing urine also warrant assessment. Seek urgent help if you cannot pass urine or symptoms are rapidly worsening. Dehydration can make urine concentrated; inability to keep fluids down makes it more concerning.

Ask whether you need testing, whether the sample could be contaminated, which findings suggest infection, and how soon to return if symptoms change.
