Upper Groin Pull: What to Know

How the structures involved in Groin Strain differ from normal

Short answer

An upper groin pull is an injury to the inner-thigh adductor muscles, often causing pain when you run, change direction, or squeeze your legs together.

This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.

What it means

A groin pull usually happens when the adductor muscles are stretched or loaded beyond their current capacity. It may occur during a sudden sprint, kick, slide, direction change, or awkward landing. Pain can be felt high in the inner thigh or near the pubic region, with tenderness, reduced stride, or discomfort during leg squeezing. Groin Pain can also have hip, abdominal, pelvic, or other causes, so a clinical examination matters when the mechanism is unclear or symptoms persist.

The severity ranges from an overstretched muscle to a partial tear. Bruising, a sudden snap, or marked loss of strength suggests a more substantial injury and may change the rehabilitation plan.

What to do now

In the early phase, stop sprinting, kicking, and stretching that increases pain. Walk only as comfortably as possible and use a cold pack wrapped in cloth if it helps. Once everyday movement settles, Exercise Therapy can restore adductor strength, hip control, and trunk coordination. Sports Physiotherapy may identify technique or load issues that contributed to the injury.

A Return-to-Sport Programme should use staged running, cutting, and sport-specific drills rather than a single fitness test. Progress when the current level is comfortable during activity and later that day.

When to seek care

Arrange assessment if pain causes a limp, prevents normal walking, or is not improving after a short period of sensible activity reduction. Seek urgent care for severe pain after trauma, a visible deformity, extensive swelling or bruising, inability to bear weight, or numbness and weakness in the leg.

Questions for your doctor

Ask which structure is injured, whether imaging is needed, what exercises are suitable now, how strength will be tested, and what milestones should come before running or sport.

Questions people ask

Should I stretch a pulled groin?

Avoid forceful stretching while it is painful; later flexibility work should be introduced gradually within a guided rehabilitation plan.

When can I return to sport?

Return when walking, strengthening, running, and sport-specific movements are comfortable and strength has been appropriately assessed.
