What should you know about unusual fatigue?

Short answer
Unusual fatigue is a symptom rather than a diagnosis and may reflect poor sleep, stress, infection, medication effects, or a medical condition requiring assessment.
This answers one question. It is not a diagnosis and does not replace an assessment by a licensed doctor.
At a glance
- What it is
- Fatigue is a symptom, not a diagnosis.
- Useful preparation
- Bring medicine, sleep, diet, and recent illness details.
- Safety
- Do not drive when exhaustion affects alertness.
What unusual fatigue can signal
Fatigue may feel like low energy, heavy limbs, reduced concentration, or a need to sleep despite rest. It can follow an infection such as COVID-19, dehydration, disrupted sleep, demanding work, grief, or burnout. Anaemia, coeliac disease, chronic kidney disease, alcohol use disorder, and chronic fatigue syndrome are other possible explanations. The symptom can also come from pain, mood changes, or a medicine. The pattern matters: note whether it began suddenly, follows exertion, improves with rest, or comes with weight change, breathlessness, fever, or digestive symptoms.
How to approach it
Book a clinical review when fatigue persists, keeps returning, affects work or driving, or is not explained by recent sleep loss. Bring a list of medicines and supplements, your sleep pattern, diet changes, alcohol intake, recent illness, and any associated symptoms. Gentle activity, regular meals, adequate fluids, and a consistent sleep routine may help while you arrange assessment. Avoid treating ongoing fatigue with excessive caffeine or stopping prescribed medicines without advice.
When to seek urgent care
Seek emergency care for fatigue with chest pain, severe breathlessness, fainting, new confusion, one-sided weakness, trouble speaking, or a severe allergic reaction. Get prompt medical advice for black stools, heavy bleeding, persistent vomiting, inability to drink, or rapidly worsening weakness. Fatigue that makes driving unsafe requires you to stop and arrange help.
Questions for your doctor
Ask what causes fit your symptom pattern, whether blood tests or other checks are appropriate, how medicines and sleep may contribute, what activity is safe, and which changes should lead to earlier review.

Questions people ask

Can dehydration cause fatigue?
Yes. Fluid loss can reduce energy and concentration, particularly with illness, heat, vomiting, or diarrhoea.
