What should you know about unexplained chills?

Shivering is a way the body produces heat, and it can happen before or during a fever. Influenza and other infections may cause chills with cough, sore throat, aches, or tiredness. Urinary Tract Infection or Kidney Infection may add burning urination, frequent urination, flank pain, nausea, or fever. Pneumonia can involve cough and breathing difficulty. Malaria and Dengue Fever become relevant after travel or mosquito exposure. Sepsis is a serious body-wide response to infection and can include chills with confusion, fast breathing, or feeling profoundly unwell. A chill by itself does not identify the cause.

Check your temperature if possible and write down when the chills began, how long they last, and any pain, cough, urinary change, rash, vomiting, or recent travel. Rest, use light layers, and drink fluids if you can swallow normally. Arrange same-day medical advice when chills recur, come with fever, or follow travel to a malaria-risk area. Avoid taking leftover antibiotics; treatment depends on the cause and examination.

Seek emergency care for confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, blue or grey lips, severe weakness, a rapidly spreading rash, stiff neck, persistent vomiting, or very little urine. Chills with severe pain, a very high or unusually low temperature, or rapidly worsening illness need prompt assessment. Tell clinicians about recent travel, insect bites, pregnancy, immune problems, and new medicines.
