Under Eye Puffiness Causes: What to Know

Puffiness that is mild, longstanding, and similar on both sides may relate to inherited anatomy, ageing, fluid shifts, or tiredness. Itching, sneezing, watery eyes, or a raised itchy rash can occur with Hives or another allergic process. Angioedema causes deeper swelling and can affect the eyelids, lips, or face. Warmth, tenderness, spreading redness, fever, or feeling unwell raises concern for Cellulitis, an infection that needs medical assessment.

Note when the puffiness began, whether one or both eyes are affected, and any new food, medicine, cosmetic, bite, or illness. A cool clean compress may ease temporary discomfort; avoid rubbing the eyes and stop a newly introduced product. Persistent, recurrent, or unexplained swelling deserves an examination so allergy, infection, eye disease, and structural changes are considered in the right order.

Seek urgent help for swelling of the tongue or throat, breathing difficulty, faintness, or rapidly progressing facial swelling. Get prompt medical review for painful one-sided swelling, fever, warmth, reduced eye movement, severe headache, vision change, or swelling after an injury. These features can require treatment beyond home measures.

Ask whether the pattern fits allergy, infection, irritation, fluid retention, or anatomy; which warning signs matter for you; and whether any medicine or product should be stopped.
