What should you know about uncontrolled hypertension?

Hypertension often causes no noticeable symptoms, so a person can feel well while pressure remains high. A single reading may be affected by stress, pain, caffeine, exercise, or an inaccurate cuff; repeated measurements provide a clearer picture. Persistent high pressure places strain on artery walls and can contribute to stroke, heart failure, angina, and chronic kidney disease over time.

Control may be affected by missed doses, side effects, interactions, kidney problems, sleep apnoea, weight changes, or high salt intake. Your clinician may compare home readings with clinic measurements and review medicines, lifestyle, and other conditions before adjusting treatment.

Take prescribed treatment consistently and do not double a dose after forgetting one unless your clinician has given that instruction. Measure at consistent times with a validated upper-arm monitor, seated quietly with the arm supported, and record the results with your medicines and symptoms. Limit salty processed foods, avoid smoking, keep active within your ability, and address sleep problems. Arrange a review when readings remain above your agreed target or side effects make treatment difficult.

Seek emergency help for severe chest pain, sudden weakness or numbness on one side, trouble speaking, new confusion, fainting, severe breathlessness, or sudden vision loss. These can signal heart or brain problems and require urgent assessment. Contact a clinician promptly for persistently high readings, pregnancy with high readings, severe headache, or symptoms that are new or worsening. Do not rely on how you feel to judge blood pressure control.
