What should you know about uncontrollable shivering not cold?

Short answer
Uncontrollable shivering without cold exposure can signal fever or infection, so check for other symptoms and seek help when severe.

Why shivering can happen
Shivering is rapid muscle activity that generates heat. It can occur as a fever rises, even when the room feels warm. An infection affecting the lungs, urinary system, kidneys, or whole body may cause chills alongside fever, pain, cough, vomiting, weakness, or changes in urination. Influenza and pneumonia can produce respiratory symptoms; malaria and dengue fever are relevant possibilities after travel or exposure in affected areas. The pattern and accompanying symptoms matter more than the shaking alone.
Not every episode is an infection. Low blood sugar, some medicines, anxiety, hormone changes, or a neurological problem can also cause shaking. A clinician may check temperature, hydration, breathing, circulation, and the likely source of illness.
What to do now
Check your temperature if you can and note when the shivering began. Rest, take fluids in small amounts, and use light layers rather than heavy overheating. Look for cough, shortness of breath, headache, rash, abdominal or back pain, burning urine, confusion, or reduced urine. Mention recent travel, insect bites, sick contacts, and new medicines when seeking advice. Do not take leftover antibiotics or delay care while waiting for the shaking to stop.
When to seek care
Seek urgent help for confusion, extreme weakness, difficulty breathing, blue or pale skin, fainting, severe pain, a rapidly spreading rash, repeated vomiting, or very little urine. Urgent assessment is also needed when shivering accompanies a high fever, pregnancy, serious long-term illness, or recent travel to a malaria-risk area. Contact a clinician promptly if episodes recur or fever and infection symptoms do not settle.
Questions for your doctor
Ask which infection sources fit your symptoms, whether urine or blood tests are needed, and how to monitor your temperature and hydration. Tell the clinician about travel, medicines, chronic conditions, and the timing of each episode.
