What should you know about ulnar bursitis of the wrist?

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that helps tissues move smoothly. Irritation near the little-finger side of the wrist may cause a soft or firm-feeling lump, tenderness with pressure, and pain during gripping or bending. Joint Swelling in the same region can have other explanations, including injury, inflammation, infection, or a cyst.

The appearance of the swelling does not identify its cause by itself. A clinician may check the skin, temperature, range of motion, tendons, and nerves, and may use imaging or fluid testing when the findings are unclear.

Rest from leaning on the wrist and from movements that repeatedly compress the tender area. Keep the wrist gently mobile within comfort, avoid tight watches or supports over the swelling, and use a cloth-wrapped cold pack for short periods if it helps.

A clinician may discuss Anti-Inflammatory Medication after checking your health history and other medicines. If fluid remains or the diagnosis needs clarification, Joint Aspiration may be considered. A Cortisone Injection is not suitable for every swelling and should only be discussed after infection and other causes have been assessed.

Arrange an assessment if the lump persists, grows, limits wrist movement, or keeps returning. Seek urgent care if the area becomes hot and red, pain escalates quickly, or swelling is accompanied by fever or feeling unwell.

After an injury, prompt review is sensible when there is marked bruising, deformity, weakness, or difficulty moving the fingers. Numbness, pale or cold fingers, or rapidly increasing swelling require immediate attention.

Ask whether the swelling is in a bursa, joint, tendon sheath, or cyst; whether imaging or fluid testing is needed; and which activities should be avoided. Ask about medication risks and what change would require urgent review.
